CT Side vs T Side: How Sides and Halftime Work in CS2

How each side wins a round
| T side (attack) | CT side (defense) | |
|---|---|---|
| Main goal | plant the bomb at site A or B and let it explode | stop the plant or defuse the bomb |
| Wins by elimination | yes, before or after the plant | yes, but only before the plant (after a plant, the bomb must be defused) |
| Wins when time runs out | no | yes, if the bomb is not planted |
| Bomb exploding | wins | loses |
| Default pistol | Glock-18 | USP-S or P2000 |
A planted bomb changes the round: the round clock is replaced by a 40-second bomb timer, and the CTs have to retake the site. Details in How Long Is a Round in CS2?
How T side plays
The T side chooses where and when to fight. Typical T rounds:
- Default: spread out, gather information and attack late.
- Execute: all five hit one site together with grenades.
- Fake: pretend to attack one site to pull defenders, then hit the other.
The T side's advantage is surprise. Its disadvantage is that it must cross open ground into a defended site.
How CT side plays
CTs have to cover two sites with five players. They usually split, for example two on A, two on B and one in the middle, and rotate when the attack comes. Many teams leave a site lightly defended on purpose and plan to retake it.
CT-sided and T-sided maps
Map layout decides which side has it easier. On some maps the defenders win clearly more rounds; on others the attackers do.
| Lean | What it means for a team |
|---|---|
| CT-sided map | the defenders win more rounds; start on T, finish on the easier CT side |
| T-sided map | the attackers win more rounds; start on CT |
| Balanced | either side is fine |
Nuke is the classic example of a CT-sided map. How a map leans also shifts with patches and with how teams play it. That is why the side choice after the map veto matters: the team that did not pick the map gets to choose its starting side.
Halftime
After round 12 the teams switch sides, and money resets to $800, so round 13 is a second pistol round. A team that leads 9-3 after a strong CT half on a CT-sided map is not always safe: its second half on T side may be much harder.
Sides in overtime
At 12-12 in pro play, overtime starts: 3 rounds on one side, then 3 on the other. See CS2 Overtime Rules.
Reading the score with sides in mind
A 7-5 at halftime means more if you know who was on the harder side. A team that leads after its weaker half is in a much better spot than the score suggests.
FAQ
What is the difference between CT and T in CS2?
Terrorists (T) attack and try to plant and detonate the bomb. Counter-Terrorists (CT) defend the two bombsites and win by stopping the plant, defusing the bomb or running out the clock.
When do teams switch sides in CS2?
After round 12, at halftime. In overtime, teams switch after every 3 rounds.
What does CT-sided mean?
A map is CT-sided when the defending side wins more rounds on it on average. On such a map, a team wants to start on T side, so it can finish on the easier side.
Who chooses the starting side?
On a map picked in the veto, the other team chooses the starting side. On the decider, it is usually settled by a knife round or the tournament rules.
