How the round clock works

Every round starts with freeze time. Players cannot move yet, but they can buy weapons, armor and grenades and agree on a plan. Then the 1:55 round clock starts.

From here, the round ends in one of four ways:

  1. One team eliminates the other.
  2. The clock reaches zero with no bomb planted. CTs win.
  3. The bomb explodes. Ts win.
  4. A CT defuses the bomb. CTs win.

What happens when the bomb is planted

The moment the bomb is planted, the round timer disappears and the 40-second bomb timer starts, no matter how much round time was left. This is why Ts sometimes plant with only a few seconds on the clock: a plant at 0:03 still gives them 40 seconds to defend it.

The CTs now have to retake the site and defuse. A defuse takes 10 seconds without a kit or 5 seconds with one, and it must be finished before the bomb explodes. If a CT starts a defuse without a kit with less than 10 seconds left, it is already too late.

How long a round really takes

The 1:55 is the maximum, not the average. Many rounds end much faster: a fast attack can end in 30 seconds, and a team that is short on money may lose quickly on purpose to save its guns. Add freeze time and the short break after each round, and a typical pro round takes a bit under two minutes of real time.

That is why a full map of up to 24 rounds usually takes 40 to 60 minutes in a pro match, timeouts included. See How Long Is a CS2 Match?

Is it different in other modes?

Yes. The timers above are for Premier, Competitive and pro matches. Casual, Wingman and other modes use their own round times and rules. If you are watching esports, the competitive values are the ones that matter.

FAQ

How long is a round in CS2?

The round timer is 1 minute 55 seconds. If the bomb is planted, a 40-second bomb timer replaces it, so a round can last a little over two minutes.

Can a CS2 round last longer than 1:55?

Yes. A plant late in the round starts the 40-second bomb timer, which can push the round past 1:55. Freeze time before the round and the short pause after it also add time.

How long is the bomb timer in CS2?

40 seconds from the moment the bomb is planted. Defusing takes 10 seconds, or 5 seconds with a defuse kit.

What is freeze time in CS2?

Freeze time is the short pause at the start of each round when players cannot move but can buy equipment and talk tactics. In competitive play it is usually around 15 to 20 seconds.
