K/D ratio

On pro scoreboards you will often see the same idea as a +/- number: kills minus deaths. The same player is +4.
What is a good K/D?
Every kill is someone else's death, so across all players the average K/D is about 1.00.
| K/D | What it means in pro CS2 |
|---|---|
| 1.20 or more | excellent |
| 1.05 to 1.19 | good |
| 0.95 to 1.04 | about even |
| under 0.90 | the player died more than they killed |
Why K/D is not enough
K/D is easy to understand, but it misses a lot:
- A player who deals 90 damage and lets a teammate finish the kill gets nothing for it. ADR captures that.
- A player who dies first so that a teammate can trade helped the round but loses K/D. KAST captures that.
- Late kills when the round is already decided count the same as an opening kill.
That is why analysts read K/D next to KAST, ADR and the HLTV rating.
