Dust2 in CS2: Callouts, Layout and How Pros Play It

Dust2 at a glance
- Created by: David Johnston, 2001
- In the current pool since: April 2024 (replaced Overpass)
- Earlier break: removed November 2022 for Anubis
- Big visual update: October 2017, in CS:GO
- Side lean: close to balanced
- Known for: Long A duels, AWP fights, fast B rushes
Dust2 has left the pool and come back more than once. This is how Valve announced its return in 2018, after a full visual rework:
The Active Duty map pool has been updated - Cobblestone is out and Dust2 is in. We've also added Nuke to Wingman and fixed a nasty server bug.
The layout
Dust2 has one of the simplest layouts in Counter-Strike, and that simplicity is the point: the map is about aim and timing more than complex routes.
- A site can be reached through Long A, a long open lane, or through Short A (also called Catwalk) from mid.
- Mid connects T spawn to both sites. Mid doors at the CT end is a classic AWP duel spot.
- B site is reached through Upper tunnels from the T side. CTs rotate to B through mid and B doors.
Key callouts
| Area | Callouts |
|---|---|
| A site | Long A, Long doors, Pit, Car, Goose, A ramp, Short A (Catwalk), A platform |
| Mid | Mid doors, Xbox, Suicide, Lower tunnels |
| B site | Upper tunnels, B doors, B window, Back plat, Car (B), Closet |
| Spawns | T spawn, CT spawn |
How pros play Dust2
T side. The biggest decision is how to use Long A. Teams often fight for Long early to split A from Long and Short at the same time. B is usually hit fast through Upper tunnels, because the site is close to the tunnels and a quick rush can catch a light defense.
CT side. Long A is the main battleground. CTs usually put an AWPer on A or in mid to fight Long and Mid doors, with one or two players holding B. Because rotations through mid are short, CTs can retake either site quickly, which makes retakes common on Dust2.
What to watch: the opening duels on Long and in mid. A team that wins those regularly controls the round before anyone reaches a site.
Dust2 in the veto
Dust2 rewards teams with strong individual aim, especially riflers who love open duels. Teams built on detailed tactics sometimes ban it because it gives them less room to out-think their opponents. See Map Veto in CS2.
