BO1 vs BO3 vs BO5: Match Formats in CS2

Quick comparison
| Format | Maps played | Wins needed | Where it is used | Typical length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BO1 | 1 | 1 | early stages, Swiss rounds, qualifiers | about 1 hour |
| BO2 | 2 | n/a, 1-1 is a draw | some group stages | about 2 hours |
| BO3 | 2 or 3 | 2 | most important matches, playoffs | 2 to 3 hours |
| BO5 | 3 to 5 | 3 | grand finals | 3 to 5 hours |
BO1: one map, more upsets
In a BO1, one map decides everything. A team that wins the pistol rounds and has a good day can beat a much stronger opponent. That makes BO1 exciting, but also the format where favorites lose most often.
Teams also have a big advantage on their best map, and in a BO1 the veto often decides who gets it.
BO3: the standard
A BO3 forces each team to play on more than one map. Each team picks one map, and the third, the decider, is the map left after the veto. A team needs to win on at least one map it did not choose. That is why BO3 is considered the fairest format and is used for most important matches.
BO5: grand finals
A BO5 is long and rare. It usually appears only in the grand final of big events. Teams have to be strong on four or five maps, so deep map pools win BO5s.
How Majors use these formats
CS2 Majors mix all three. At the PGL Major Singapore 2026, for example, the three Swiss stages are played as BO1, except elimination and advancement matches, which are BO3. The playoffs use BO3 for the quarterfinals and semifinals and BO5 for the grand final. See What Is a CS2 Major?
