Benched (bench)

Why teams bench players:
- poor results, and the team wants a change;
- a new role or playstyle the player does not fit;
- the team wants to sign someone else, but the benched player's contract has not ended or been sold.
What happens next: a benched player can be transferred to another team, loaned, brought back into the lineup or released when the contract ends. Some stay on the bench for months.
While a replacement is not ready, a team may play with a stand-in. A young player may come up from the academy team.
Why it matters for rankings: rankings like VRS and HLTV follow a core of three players. Benching one player usually does not reset a team's ranking, but several changes at once can. See CS2 Team Rankings Explained.
